A study published in The Lancet journal found that respiratory illnesses acquired in early childhood are linked to a higher chance of death from a respiratory disease between the ages of 26 and 73.

Data for the study was collected from the National Survey of Health and Development, which included a cohort of individuals, recruited nationwide in Britain (born in 1946 and after) and examined health and death records up to 2019.

Although there were few premature deaths from respiratory illnesses overall, the studys findings indicate that regardless of socioeconomic status or smoking habits, adults who had a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) by the age of two, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, were 93% more likely to pass away from respiratory illnesses before their time.

According to the researchers, chronic respiratory disorders are a significant public health issue, which caused an estimated 3.9 million deaths in 2017, or 7% of all fatalities worldwide. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) brought most of these fatalities.

LRTIs occurring in childhood have been connected to the emergence of adult lung function deficits, asthma, and COPD, but it has not yet been shown whether there is a link to adult-onset premature death.

Experts stated that the main focus of modern adult lifestyle modification needed to reduce the risk factor of respiratory disease is to stop smoking. They also emphasized the necessity to tackle risk far before maturity, demonstrated by the link between common infections that occurred decades earlier in childhood and one in five respiratory fatalities in adults.
